Back in Dubai 02.-11.03.2017

Schneller als erwartet zog es uns wieder nach Dubai. Wieder eine ziemlich spontane Entscheidung. Eigentlich wollten wir die billigen Flüge nach Dublin ausnutzen. Aber bei der Erinnerung an unseren Traumurlaub letztes Jahr, das schöne Wetter, einem Blick durch das Fenster in den deutschen Dauerregen wurde aus Dublin ziemlich schnell Dubai und hier waren wir wieder. 

Es war schon fast ein bisschen wie "nach Hause kommen". Keine bangen Fragen mehr, was uns erwartet, sondern nur noch pure Freude. 

Okay, es war auch viel Freude dabei, dass wir den Flug hinter uns hatten. In einer Sardinenbüchse von Pegasus von Düsseldorf nach Istanbul, dort vier Stunden Aufenthalt und mit der nächsten Sardinenbüchse weiter nach Dubai. Es war nicht wirklich witzig. 

Faster than expected, we moved back to Dubai. Again a pretty spontaneous decision. Actually we wanted to take advantage of the cheap flights to Dublin. But remembering our dream holiday last year, the beautiful weather, a look through the window in the German continuous rain Dublin was pretty fast Dubai and here we were again.

It was almost like coming home. No more worries about what awaits us, just pure joy.

Okay, it was also a lot of fun that we had the flight behind us. In a Sardinenbüchse of Pegasus from Dusseldorf to Istanbul, there four hours stay and with the next sardine can further to Dubai. It was not really funny.

Day 1

Gegen 6.00 Uhr erreichten wir unser Hotel. Da wir für diesen Tag noch kein Zimmer hatten, konnten wir natürlich noch nicht einchecken, aber man bot uns einen Raum zum Warten an. Das Ganze nannte sich etwas großspurig Lounge, aber es gab gemütliche Sofas und Sessel und ließ sich gut aushalten. Natürlich wurden wir nach einer Weile doch müde und da es inzwischen hell war, beschlossen wir, uns auf den Weg zur Wafi Mall zu machen. Frühstück wär auch nicht schlecht,.

Wafi Mall war vom Hotel aus zu sehen, allerdings war das Erreichen zu Fuß wieder etwas problematisch. Was wir schon letztes Jahr bemerkt hatten, bestätigte sich - Dubai ist keine fußgängerfreundliche Stadt. Zwischen Hotel und Wafi Mall befand sich nämlich eine mehrspurige, stark befahrenen Straße und keine Ampel oder ähnliches in Sicht. Um die Straße zu überqueren musste man entweder lebensmüde oder sehr schnell sein. Da beides nicht auf uns zutraf, gab es eben Frühstück bei Subways. Anschließend wieder zurück zum Hotel und mit dem hoteleigenen Shuttlebus zur Wafi Mall. 

At 6 o'clock we reached our hotel. As we did not have a room for this day, we could not check in, of course, but we were offered a room to wait. The whole thing called itself a cocky lounge, but there were comfortable sofas and armchairs and it was easy to stand. Of course, we got tired after a while and since it was light, we decided to head to the Wafi Mall. Breakfast would not be bad either.

Wafi Mall was visible from the hotel, but walking was a bit problematic again. What we noticed last year was confirmed - Dubai is not a pedestrian-friendly city. Between the hotel and Wafi Mall was namely a multi-lane, busy street and no traffic lights or the like in sight. To cross the road you either had to be tired of life or very fast. Since both were not applicable to us, there was just breakfast at Subways. Then back to the hotel and with the hotel's shuttle bus to Wafi Mall.

Von außen sehr schön, aber innen doch eher eine Enttäuschung, vor allem was das Angebot betraf. Da waren wir von Dubais Einkaufszentren doch anderes gewöhnt. Der Souk im Keller der Mall war ganz nett. 

Wir gönnten uns dann auch bald ein Taxi zurück zum Hotel, wo wir inzwischen auch schon auf unser Zimmer konnten.

From the outside very nice, but inside rather a disappointment, especially with regard to the offer. Since we were used to Dubai's shopping but otherwise. The souk in the basement of the mall was nice.

We also treated ourselves to a taxi back to the hotel, where we already had our room.

Hier ein paar Worte zu unserem Hotel. Jederzeit wieder. Sehr schönes und sauberes Hotel, freundliches Personal, super Service. Preis-Leistungsverhältnis hervorragend. Auf den ersten Blick liegt das Hotel etwas außerhalb, aber die nächste Metro Station ist in knapp zehn Minuten zu Fuß zu erreichen. Man ist schnell in Downtown Dubai oder kann mit dem Wassertaxi zu Festival City übersetzen. Um das Hotel Baustelle neben Baustelle, allerdings hatten wir keine Belästigung durch Baulärm und ich denke inzwischen wird es dort eh anders aussehen. 

Der Pool lag leider den größten Teil des Tages im Schatten, aber ich in Dubai gibt es schließlich wichtigeres als am Pool zu liegen.

Und ganz wichtig - in der Ferne war der Burj Khalifa zu sehen. 

Zu vielen Zielen in Dubai fahren mehrmals täglich kostenlose Shuttle - Busse.

Here are a few words about our hotel. Any time. Very nice and clean hotel, friendly staff, great service. Price-performance ratio excellent. At first glance, the hotel is a bit out of the way, but the nearest metro station is just under ten minutes walk away. It's quick in Downtown Dubai or can take a water taxi to Festival City. Around the hotel construction site next to construction site, however, we had no annoyance due to construction noise and I think it will look different there anyway.

Unfortunately, the pool was in the shade for most of the day, but in Dubai I'm more important than lying by the pool.

And very important - in the distance was the Burj Khalifa to see.

Many Dubai destinations have free shuttle buses several times a day.

Sehr zufrieden mit dem Zimmer, auspacken, schnell unter die Dusche hüpfen und bereit zu neuen Taten. Der nächste Shuttle - Bus brachte uns zur Dubai Mall, wo schon die Fontänen und unser Türmchen auf uns warteten. Die Oper, letztes Jahr noch Großbaustelle, war inzwischen auch fertig.

Einen wunderschönen Sonnenuntergang gab es später noch dazu.

Very happy with the room, unpack, jump quickly into the shower and ready for new deeds. The next shuttle bus took us to the Dubai Mall where the fountains and turrets were already waiting for us. The opera, which was still a major construction site last year, was also finished by now.

There was a beautiful sunset later.

Day 2

Oder auch Tag 1 der großen Suche nach dem Dubai Canal. Ich hatte nämlich vor dem Urlaub ein Bild von einer blau beleuchteten, halbrunden Brücke gesehen. Und da wollte ich unbedingt hin. Laut Internet ging die Brücke über den Dubai Canal. 

Wie schon erwähnt fuhren vom Hotel täglich mehrere Shuttle - Busse zu unterschiedlichen Zielen in Dubai. Und bei der Fahrt zu Festival City gab es ein Bild von genau dieser Brücke. Cool, wir also mit dem Shuttle - Bus zu Festival City.

Festival City ist ein Neubaugebiet am östlichen Ufer des Dubai Creek. Der Bus hielt direkt am Festival City Einkaufszentrum, auch Festival Waterfront Centre, das wir erst einmal erforschten. Durch das Einkaufszentrum erreichten wir den Dubai Creek und sahen uns vergeblich nach der Brücke und dem Canal um - nix. Auf mehrere Fragen bestätigte man uns zwar, dass das hier der Dubai Canal sei, aber es war definitiv nicht das, was wir suchten. 

Aber so schnell gaben wir ja nicht auf. Wir gingen in alle Richtungen weiter, erkundeten zahlreiche Fußwege, die früher oder später immer in einer Baustelle endeten. Irgendwann gaben wir dann doch auf, fuhren mit dem Shuttle - Bus ins Hotel zurück, um im Internet neue Nachforschungen anzustellen. 

Dabei fanden wir dann folgendes heraus. Es gibt Dubai Canal und Canal Walk. Der Canal Walk hieß früher ebenfalls Dubai Canal und war in Festival City. Der eigentliche Canal existiert allerdings nicht mehr. Bist du verwirrt? Waren wir auch. Aber mit Hilfe der Angaben im Internet und eines Stadtplans wussten wir jetzt jedenfalls wo wir hinwollten - hofften wir zumindest. Wir würden das Projekt Dubai Canal auf jeden Fall noch einmal in Angriff nehmen.

Or also day 1 of the big search for the Dubai Canal. I had seen before the holiday a picture of a blue-lit, semicircular bridge. And I really wanted to go there. According to the Internet, the bridge went over the Dubai Canal.

As already mentioned, the hotel drove daily several shuttle buses to different destinations in Dubai. And on the way to Festival City there was a picture of exactly this bridge. Cool, so we take the shuttle bus to Festival City.

Festival City is a development area on the eastern shore of Dubai Creek. The bus stopped right at the Festival City shopping center, also Festival Waterfront Center, which we explored first. Through the mall we reached the Dubai Creek and looked in vain for the bridge and the canal. Several questions confirmed that this was the Dubai Canal, but it was definitely not what we were looking for.

But we did not give up that fast. We went on in all directions, exploring numerous footpaths that sooner or later always ended up in a construction site. At some point we gave up then, took the shuttle bus back to the hotel to make new research on the Internet.

We found out the following. There are Dubai Canal and Canal Walk. The Canal Walk was also known as the Dubai Canal and was in Festival City. However, the actual Canal does not exist anymore. Are you confused? We were too. But with the help of the information on the Internet and a map of the city, we now knew where we wanted to go - at least we hoped. We would certainly tackle the Dubai Canal project again.

Day 3

Heute zog es uns nach Deira. Wir hatten irgendwo gelesen, dass man den Clocktower gesehen haben muss und wollten das jetzt nachholen. Okay, er sieht ganz nett aus, aber ob es ein MUSS ist? Entscheide selbst. Danch führte uns ein gemütlicher Bummel durch Deira und den Dubai Creek entlang und wir besuchten Gold- und Gewürzsouk, was wir letztes Jahr nicht geschafft hatten.

Mit dem Wassertaxi überquerten wir den Dubai Creek nach Bur Dubai.

Wassertaxis sind eine schnelle und günstige Möglichkeit, den Creek zu überqueren. Sie fahren los, wenn sie voll sind, was nie länger als ein paar Minuten dauert. Und für umgerechnet 0,25 € ist man ruckzuck auf der anderen Seite.

Today we moved to Deira. We read somewhere that you must have seen the Clocktower and wanted to make up for it now. Okay, he looks nice, but is it a MUST? Decide for yourself. Danch took us on a leisurely stroll through Deira and the Dubai Creek and we visited gold and spice souk, which we did not manage last year.

By water taxi we crossed the Dubai Creek to Bur Dubai.

Water taxis are a quick and cheap way to cross the creek. They start when they are full, which never lasts more than a few minutes. And for the equivalent of € 0.25 you are on the other side.

In Bur Dubai schlenderten wir zuerst durch den Textil - Souk. Mit stoischer Ruhe und Ignoranz ließen wir zuerst alle "Bedrängungen", uns zum Kauf zu überreden, über uns ergehen. Schon ein längerer Blick führte dazu, dass man uns etwas aufdrängen wollte. Dann habe ich ein T-Shirt entdeckt, das mir gefiel, und war so mutig, nach dem Preis zu fragen. Ganz dumme Idee. Da stand ich in seinem Laden und das T-Shirt war mir zu teuer. Handeln ist eigentlich nicht so mein Ding, ich wollte einfach wieder gehen. Einfach war das definitiv nicht. Der Typ verstellte mir immer wieder den Weg, ging dabei aber auch ständig mit dem Preis runter. Ich hab das T-Shirt schließlich gekauft. Zum einen war der Preis mittlerweile für mich in Ordnung, aber vor allem wollte ich aus diesem Laden raus. Ich war schon ziemlich genervt.

Also Blick nur noch stur geradeaus und weiter.

Wir bummelten weiter durch Bur Dubai und landeten zum Schluß wieder im Bastakiya - Viertel. 

In Bur Dubai we first strolled through the textile souk. With stoic calm and ignorance, we first had all the "oppressions" to persuade us to buy over us. Even a longer look meant that we wanted to impose something on us. Then I discovered a T-shirt I liked and was so brave to ask for the prize. Very stupid idea. There I stood in his shop and the T-shirt was too expensive for me. Dealing is not really my thing, I just wanted to go again. That was definitely not easy. The guy always obstructed my way, but also went down constantly with the price. I finally bought the T-shirt. Firstly, the price was okay for me, but above all, I wanted to get out of this store. I was pretty annoyed.

So just look stubborn straight ahead and on.

We continued to stroll through Bur Dubai and ended up back in the Bastakiya district.

Day 4

Heute haben wir uns mal Luxushotels aus der Nähe angeschaut. Mal ein bißchen davon träumen, was wir uns nicht leisten können.

Today we have looked at luxury hotels up close. Let's dream a bit about what we can not afford.

Die Anlage dieses Hotels ist teilweise der Öffentlichkeit zugängig. Einfach nur wow. Ein Kanal, auf dem man eine Bootsfahrt unternehmen kann, zieht sich durch die riesige Anlage. Ein hoteleigener Souk darf auch nicht fehlen. Wirklich eine wunderschöne Anlage. Aber seht selbst.

The facility of this hotel is partly open to the public. Just wow. A canal on which you can take a boat trip, runs through the huge complex. An on-site souk may not be missing. Really a beautiful plant. But see for yourself.

Um das ganze noch zu toppen ging es weiter zum Burj al Arab. Dort ist allerdings wenn man kein Gast ist, oder eine Reservierung für eines der Restaurants hat, an der Zufahrt Schluß.

To top it all off we went on to Burj al Arab. There is however, if you are not a guest, or a reservation for one of the restaurants, at the driveway end.

Danach noch kurz an den Strand, um sich wenigstens ein Fußbad im Persischen Golf zu gönnen.

Then briefly to the beach, to treat yourself to at least a foot bath in the Persian Gulf.

Und dann hatten wir ihn tatsächlich gefunden - den Dubai Canal. Der Kanal selbst ist bereits fertig gestellt, aber rechts und links noch Großbaustelle. Ich bin gespannt, wie es aussieht, wenn alles fertig. Aber ich bin sicher, das wird eine großartige Anlage. Sehr interessante Brücken. Die Beleuchtung ist wunderschön. Die blau beleuchtete Brücke, der pink beleuchtete Wasserfall, alles sehr stimmungsvoll.

And then we actually found him - the Dubai Canal. The canal itself is already completed, but right and left still large construction site. I'm curious what it looks like when everything is ready. But I'm sure that will be a great investment. Very interesting bridges. The lighting is beautiful. The blue-lit bridge, the pink-lit waterfall, all very atmospheric.

Day 5

Wolkenkratzer an einem ca 4 km langen, künstlich geschaffenen Kanal mit dem Marina Yacht Club - das ist Dubai Marina. Und gleich dahinter der Persische Golf.

Für mich eine der schönsten Ecken Dubais.

Wir verbrachten einen entspannten Tag zwischen Kanal und Strand.

Wir haben auch immer noch den Plan, den ganzen Kanal auf beiden Seiten abzulaufen. Ich habe für den Anfang beschlossen eine Dhow - Fahrt zu unternehmen. Durch den Kanal aufs Meer und dort noch ein Stück die Küste entlang.

Skyscrapers on an approximately 4 km long, artificially created canal with the Marina Yacht Club - this is Dubai Marina. And right behind it the Persian Gulf.

For me one of the most beautiful corners of Dubai.

We spent a relaxing day between the canal and the beach.

We still have the plan to drain the whole channel on both sides. I decided for the beginning to do a dhow ride. Through the channel to the sea and there a bit along the coast.

Heute stand zuerst die Jumeirah Mosque auf dem Programm. Sie ist eine von drei Moscheen der V.A.E., die auch von Nicht - Muslimen betreten werden darf.

Das letzte Stück wollten wir mit einem öffentlichen Bus fahren. Definitiv das unnötigste in Dubai sind Busfahrpläne. Ich habe noch nie erlebt, dass ein Bus laut Fahrplan kam. Das Gute ist, sowie man an einer Bushaltestelle steht, hält sofort ein Taxi. Und die sind in Dubai sehr günstig.

Aber wir warteten naiv und hoffnungsvoll erstmal auf den Bus...und warteten...und warteten. Uta war dann irgendwann so genervt, dass sie von der Moschee nichts mehr wissen wollte und beschloss, zur Dubai Mall zurück zu fahren. Ich setzte mich in das nächste Taxi und fuhr zur Moschee.

Aus meinem Besuch in der Moschee wurde leider nichts, da man sich dazu bis 9.45 Uhr anmelden muss. Stand auch im Reiseführer. Passiert mir eigentlich selten, dass ich so wichtige Informationen übersehe. Ärgerlich, aber ließ sich jetzt nicht mehr ändern. 

Allerdings ist die Jumeirah Mosque auch von außen ein sehr schönes Gebäude, sodass sich die Fahrt auf jeden Fall gelohnt hat.

Today, the Jumeirah Mosque was on the program first. It is one of three mosques of the V.A.E., which may also be entered by non - Muslims.

The last piece we wanted to go by public bus. Definitely the most unnecessary in Dubai are bus timetables. I've never seen a bus come by the timetable. The good thing is, as soon as you stand at a bus stop, a taxi stops immediately. And they are very cheap in Dubai.

But we waited naively and hopefully for the bus ... and waited ... and waited. Uta was so annoyed at some point that she did not want to know more about the mosque and decided to drive back to the Dubai Mall. I sat in the next taxi and drove to the mosque.

From my visit to the mosque was unfortunately nothing, since you have to register until 9.45 clock. Also in the guide book. It rarely happens to me that I overlook such important information. Annoying, but could not change now.

However, the Jumeirah Mosque is also a very nice building from the outside, so the trip was definitely worth it.

Jetzt wieder zurück zur Dubai Mall. Ich schlenderte einfach mal zur nächsten Bushaltestelle und siehe da, sofort hielt ein Taxi. Also an Bushaltestellen auf ein Taxi warten funktioniert wirklich ausgezeichnet.

Now back to the Dubai Mall. I just sauntered to the next bus stop and lo and behold, a taxi stopped immediately. So waiting for a taxi at bus stops works really well.

Der Wassertank der Dubai Aquariums ist mit 10 Millionen Litern Fassungsvermögen und über 33.000 Meerestieren einer der größten der Welt. Nur einer der weltgrößten, nicht der größte? Ich bin überrascht.

Das Aquarium erstreckt sich von der ersten bis zur dritten Etage in der Dubai Mall und auf allen Etagen kann man einen Blick durch riesige Schaufenster auf die Meeresbewohner werfen. Aber ein Besuch lohnt sich dennoch. 

Faszinierend ist ein Spaziergang durch den 48 m langen Glastunnel, indem man eine Unterwasserperspektive genießen kann, während Sandtigerhaie und Mantarochen über einen hinweggleiten. Das Dubai Aquarium beherbergt die weltweit größte Gruppe von Sandtigerhaien und über 140 verschiedene Arten von Meerestieren. 

Ich hatte mich zusätzlich noch für eine Glasbodenfahrt entschieden.

The water tank of the Dubai Aquarium is one of the largest in the world, with a capacity of 10 million liters and more than 33,000 marine animals. Only one of the world's largest, not the largest? I'm surprised.

The aquarium stretches from the first floor to the third floor in the Dubai Mall and on all floors you can glimpse the sea creatures through huge windows. But a visit is still worthwhile.

Fascinating is a walk through the 48-meter glass tunnel, where you can enjoy an underwater perspective while sand tiger sharks and manta rays glide over you. The Dubai Aquarium houses the world's largest group of sand tiger sharks and more than 140 species of marine life.

Day 7

Heute gingen wir getrennte Wege. Während es Uta an den Strand zog, ging ich lieber weiter auf Entdeckungstour.

Today we went our separate ways. While pulling Uta to the beach, I preferred to go on a discovery tour.

Dubai Ferry ist eine relativ neue Attraktion. Ich entschied mich für eine Fahrt von Al Ghubaiba am Dubai Creek nach Marina, die mich die ganze Küste entlang bringen würde. Leider war es vor allem über Downtown wieder ziemlich diesig.

Bemerkenswert war, dass die Scheiben, die der Küste zugewandt waren, schön sauber geputzt waren, während man das von denen auf der Meerseite nicht behaupten konnte. Aber da gab es auch nichts interessantes zu sehen. Man durfte während der Fahrt auch auf Deck gehen, was allerdings zum Fotografieren eine ziemlich wacklige Angelegenheit war. Ich pendelte immer hin und her. Mal durch die Scheibe fotografiert, mal versucht auf Deck die Bilder nicht zu verwackeln. 

Dubai Ferry is a relatively new attraction. I decided to take a drive from Al Ghubaiba on Dubai Creek to Marina, which would take me all the way along the coast. Unfortunately it was very hazy, especially over downtown.

It was noteworthy that the windows facing the coast had been cleaned well, while those on the sea side could not be claimed. But there was nothing interesting to see. It was also allowed to go on deck during the trip, which was quite a shaky affair for taking photos. I always shuttled back and forth. Once photographed through the glass, sometimes trying not to blur the images on the deck.

Nächster Programmpunkt Miracle Garden, der größte Blumengarten der Welt. Auf 72.000 qm sind über 45 Millionen Blumen in verschiedenen Skulpturen und Dekorationen zu bewundern - und das alles mitten in der Wüste.

Da Miracle Garden in Al Barsha etwas außerhalb liegt, wagte ich mich noch einmal an das Abenteuer öffentlicher Bus. Und Überraschung - es kam nach ca 30 Minuten Wartezeit tatsächlich ein Bus, der mich ans Ziel brachte.

Miracle Garden ist wunderschön und ich kam mal wieder aus dem Staunen nicht raus. 

Next program is Miracle Garden, the largest flower garden in the world. On 72,000 square meters, over 45 million flowers can be admired in various sculptures and decorations - all in the middle of the desert.

Since Miracle Garden is located in Al Barsha just outside, I ventured once again to the adventure of public bus. And surprise - it came after about 30 minutes of waiting actually a bus that took me to the destination.

Miracle Garden is beautiful and I came out of amazement again.

Gleich um die Ecke befindet sich der Butterfly Garden. Auf über 4500 qm sind rund 35.000 Schmetterlingsarten in neun extra dafür erbauten Kuppeln untergebracht.

War schon ein Erlebnis wie die Schmetterlinge um einen herumflogen und sich auch auf einem niederließen. Mir ging dabei die Frage durch den Kopf, wann ich eigentlich das letzte Mal in Deutschland einen Schmetterling gesehen hatte. Muss wohl schon ne Weile her sein.

Im Museum sind hängen viele Bilder aus Schmetterlingen. Schön gemacht, aber lebend gefallen sie mir doch besser.

Just around the corner is the Butterfly Garden. On more than 4,500 square meters, around 35,000 butterfly species are housed in nine specially built domes.

It was an experience how the butterflies flew around you and settled on one. The question ran through my head when I actually saw a butterfly in Germany the last time. Must be a while ago.

There are many pictures of butterflies hanging in the museum. Nicely done, but live I like it better.

Im Hotel traf ich Uta wieder und wir fuhren mit dem Wassertaxi zu Festival City, um dem Hard Rock Café einen Besuch abzustatten. Der freundliche Türsteher machte dort noch eine kleine Fotosession mit uns.

Leider war es so voll, dass uns das Warten auf einen freien Platz zu lange dauerte.

At the hotel I met Uta again and we took the water taxi to Festival City to visit the Hard Rock Café. The friendly bouncer did a little photo session with us there.

Unfortunately it was so full that waiting for a free seat took us too long.

Day 8

Wieder viel zu schnell war unser letzter Urlaubstag da. Aber durch unseren Nachtflug hatten wir wenigstens den ganzen Tag noch zur Verfügung. 

Also wieder Zimmer räumen und Gepäck deponieren. Dann vertrödelten wir ein bisschen Zeit am Pool bis uns ein Shuttle - Bus zur Dubai Mall brachte. Denn wo konnten wir die letzten Stunden besser verbringen als am Dubai Lake.

Als die Fontänen dann auch noch passenderweise zu "Time to say goodbye" "tanzten", war das Gänsehaut pur. Ein schöner Abschiedsgruß für uns.

Again too fast was our last day there. But by our night flight we had at least the whole day still available.

So again clear room and deposit luggage. Then we dangled a little time at the pool until a shuttle bus took us to the Dubai Mall. Because where could we spend the last hours better than on the Dubai Lake.

When the fountains "danced" appropriately to "Time to say goodbye", the goose bumps were pure. A nice farewell for us.
